about

For about six months I kicked around this idea of making an instrumental record. I released a song in November under the name Belteshazzar LeBlanc entitled "Concentrate, Vol. 1"; a short, looping piece, designed to serve as background music more than anything else.

After then releasing a solo album of revamped church songs, I returned to this idea of instrumentals that conjure pictures, a sense of place. They evoke feelings that lay dormant inside a restless heart. So a mirror more than a picture, I guess.

The music came quickly. Heavy on atmosphere, but melodic in a way that very little of my music has ever been. It seemed strange to put my given name on something that felt so outside of myself, and my somewhat tossed-off goofy pseudonym didn't feel right either. A name derived from a system of winds that spiral out from a center of high pressure seemed to describe this season of life pretty well.

While the music was not written to accompany any particular film, it began to take the shape of one in my mind. There's certainly a narrative structure embedded within the album as it is sequenced, and I get some satisfaction from it, to be sure, but the songs would do just as well to be played on shuffle, looping infinitely into the night. I leave that decision to you, dear reader. Happy listening.

I don't normally dedicate my records to anyone in particular, but my mind kept returning to one person throughout the process. I'll always think of him whenever I hear music that spurns me onto a desire for deeper understanding, for empathy, for compassion.

John, this one's for you.
